Blood coagulation and thrombin generation are primarily a function of platelets, coagulation factors, and endothelial cells. Red blood cells (RBCs) have generally been viewed as innocent bystanders in the clotting process. However, there has been a steadily growing clinical data revealing the active roles of erythrocytes in hemostasis. RBCs may contribute to thrombosis in several by: 1. Hematology is the study of blood in health and disease. It includes problems with the red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, blood vessels, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, and the proteins involved in bleeding and clotting (hemostasis and thrombosis). After bleeding is successfully halted, the system remodels the damaged vessel to restore normal blood flow. The major components of the hemostatic system, which function in concert, are (1) platelets and other formed elements of blood, such as monocytes and red cells; (2) plasma proteins (the coagulation and fibrinolytic factors and inhibitors. Vessel injuries are occluded by the coagulation system and spontaneous vessel occlusions dissolved by the fibrinolytic cascade. Thrombosis is an imbalance toward the clotting capacity of the blood that leads to vessel occlusion by a clot. The clot prohibits further blood flow and can so cause pathological sequelae dependent on its localization.
